About us - Honors and Awards

Since its foundation, the Instituto Terra has received support and recognition from both institutions and governments for its restoration and conservation of the Atlantic Forest in the Valley of the River Doce. Here are some of the awards and prizes received over the course of the past few years.


Private Natural Heritage Reserve.

The Government of Minas Gerais, through Ordinance IEF/MG Nº 081, promulgated on October 7, 1998, awards the Bulcão Farm the title of PNHR – Private Natural Heritage Reserve. Bulcão Farm was the first project in an environmentally degraded territory to be recognized in this way for its commitment to resuscitate the area.


Title of Municipal Public Service – Aimorés, Minas Gerais.

On December 17, 1999, the Instituto Terra is declared, through Law nº 1.613/99, of ‘service to the public’ at the Town Hall of the Municipality of Aimorés.


Title of Public Service to the State of Minas Gerais

Under Law Nº 15.525 of June 9, 2004, the Government of the State of Minas Gerais declares the Instituto Terra an Entity of Public Service to the State.

4th Furnas Prize - Ouro Azul (Blue Gold)

The Instituto Terra wins the 4th Furnas - Ouro Azul Prize, coming in third place in the Community Category for its “Project of Education and Recuperation of the Atlantic Forest in the Valley of the River Doce”.


The Alcan Prize for Sustainable Development

Created in association with the International Business Leaders’ Forum, this prize selects and rewards non-profit, non-government organizations for their contribution to economic, environmental, and/or social development. The Instituto Terra, as a finalist in 2006, is awarded a scholarship for the Post-Graduate Certificate in Cross Sector Partnership, a post-graduate program certified by the University of Cambridge.


Diploma of Legislative Merit – Minas Gerais

The Legislative Assembly of the State of Minas Gerais awards the Instituto Terra the diploma of the State’s Order of Legislative Merit for significant services rendered, notably those directed at the environmental recovery of the area of the Valley of the River Doce.

Commendable Associate of the Military Constabulary – Minas Gerais

The Military Constabulary of the state of Minas Gerais concedes to the Instituto Terra the title of Commendable Associate for significant services rendered to the Corporation.


13th Ford Prize for Environmental Conservation

For its creation of the “Advanced Center of Sustainable Environmental Recuperation and Rural Development,” the Instituto Terra wins the 13th edition of the Ford Motor Company and International Conservation prize for Environmental Conservation, in the category Science and Training in Human Resources.

7th Furnas Prize - Ouro Azul (Blue Gold)

For the 7th edition of the Furnas – Ouro Azul Prize, the Instituto Terra is honored in the category ‘Community’, for its research into the monitoring of water in the PNHR Bulcão Farm. This study proved that the new vegetation cover permitted the restoration of both the quantity and quality of water in the streams of the Bulcão Farm and served as an example of the revitalization of water resources.


Advance Outpost of the Biosphere Reserve – MAB/UNESCO

The Instituto Terra receives the approval of the Bureau of the Biosphere Reserve of the Atlantic Forest (RBMA) to act as an Advance Outpost of its organization. These outposts act as promoters of Biosphere Reserve concepts and projects focused on the conservation of the biome of the Atlantic Rain Forest. Biosphere Reserves are ecosystem regions - terrestrial and/or marine - that are recognized by the MAB/UNESCO program as being of world importance both for the conservation of biodiversity and for sustainable development. In addition they are designed to serve as priority regions in the testing and execution of these environmental practices. The Instituto Terra was the first conservation entity in Minas Gerais to be accorded this title.


Sustainable Ideas

The PNHR of the Bulcão Farm becomes part of the “Bank of Sustainable Ideas” listed in the book, “The Atlantic Rain Forest – National Patrimony of the Brazilians”, published by Brazil’s Ministry of the Environment.


Title of Federal Public Service

The Instituto Terra is designated by the Minas Gerais State Ministry of Justice as an entity of Federal Public Utility, as recorded in the Official Daily of the Brazilian Government (Diário Oficial da União) on May 2, 2011. This represents public recognition by the Federal government of the significant services provided by a private community association in its own areas of interest – environmental education, ecosystem recovery, applied research and promotion of sustainable rural development.

Title of State Public Service – Espírito Santo

The Instituto Terra is recognized as an entity of Public Service Utility in the State of Espírito Santo, in accordance with the Law 9.674 approved by the State Government and promulgated by Espírito Santo’s Legislative Authority. The title is awarded in consideration of the powerful presence and activity of the Instituto Terra in Espírito Santo through the innumerable projects it has developed in municipalities of the State that are lapped by the River Doce.

Best Practices of UN-Water

The Instituto Terra’s Program "Eyes of Water", dedicated to the recovery and protection of natural springs, is recorded by UN-Water among the seventy best programs worldwide currently active in the recovery and conservation of water.

Hugo Werneck Prize

For its reforestation of damaged areas of Brazil's Atlantic Rain Forest carried out on the PNHR Bulcão Farm in Aimorés, Minas Gerais, the Instituto Terra wins the Hugo Werneck Prize for Sustainability and Love for Nature in the category Flora. This ‘Oscar of Ecology,’ as it is called, is an initiative by Brazil’s Ecological Group - through its magazine, "Ecológico" – supported by the Government of Minas Gerais, the Dom Cabral Foundation, the Hugo Werneck Center for the Protection of Nature and the Minas Gerais Association for the Defence of the Environment.


Prize E – Category Education

An honor bestowed on the founders of the Instituto Terra (Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado and Sebastião Salgado) during the Rio+20 conference for the creation of and the work carried out by the Instituto Terra. The prize, sponsored by UNESCO, the Instituto-E and the Government of the City of Rio de Janeiro, recognizes the most important initiatives for the promotion of sustainable development since the first Rio conference in 1992. Presentation of the Prize-E was part of the official agenda of the Conference of the United Nations on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) and included in the Project Humanity 2012.

WWF-Brazil-Prize - Environmental Personality

The World Wide Fund for Nature Brazil gave of its biennial Prize for an Environmental Personality to the founders of the Instituto Terra, Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado and Sebastião Salgado. First created in 2008, the WWF-Brazil Environmental Personality Prize is given to an individual recognized for his work for the conservation of nature and for the promotion of sustainable development in Brazil.
